Day 1

Airport/Negombo

Driving time - 20 minutes AM – Welcome to Sri Lanka, our airport representative will meet, assist and introduce you to your guide for your tour of Sri Lanka, on arrival at the Jetwing beach hotel your guide will assist you with the check in and then brief you on the time you will be required to be ready on the following morning for the commencement of your tour of Sri Lanka, and the arrangements with regards to wake up calls and breakfast. Day 2

Negombo/Anuradhapura

Driving time – 4.5 hours AM – Breakfast and leave the hustle and bustle of the lively beach resort of Negombo and its suburbs on an exciting drive through Towns, Villages, woodlands, rice paddies and marshes into the rural heartland of tropical Sri Lanka, your destination is the ancient capital city of Anuradhapura where you will check in to the Palm Garden Village hotel PM – Refresh and leave on a sightseeing tour of the ancient ruins of the 4th century BC capital city of Anuradhapura, a tour of the ancient ruins include places of veneration such as gigantic Stupas’ second in size to the Pyramids of Egypt and the Sri Maha Bodhi; or the Sacred Bo tree as it is known to the Buddhists. It is said to be the oldest documented tree on earth. Day 3

Anuradhapura/Wilpattu

Driving time – approx. 1 hour AM – Your choice of a pre-arranged early breakfast at the hotel or collect a packed breakfast from the reception before you leave on a early morning safari drive through Wilpattu National Park; Sri Lanka’s oldest and largest national park with an area of 131,693 hectares; designated as a wild life sanctuary in 1905 and upgraded to a national park in 1938. It has an unique eco system consisting of natural lakes, Scrubland jungle, Grassland and dense forest and it provides a habitat for 31 species of mammals, including elephant, sloth bear, water buffalo, leopard, spotted deer, mongoose, sambhur, moose deer and shrew to name a few, while wetland bird species found here include, painted stork, black-headed ibis, Migratory garganeys(Dabbling Duck), pin tails, whistling teals, Eurasian spoonbills, white egret, cattle egret, purple heron, asian open bill, cormorant and a variety of kingfisher species. Reptilian species include, monitor lizard, mugger crocodile, common cobra, rat snake, Indian python, pond and soft shelled turtles and star tortoise. Butterfly species spotted in the park include the great egg fly, great orange tip, glad-eye bush brown, blue and common Mormon and the common and crimson rose. Day 4

Anuradhapura/Trincomalee

Driving time approx. 2 hours AM – Breakfast and leave for Trincomalee you will reach a reservoir called “Maha Divul Wewa” en route. The reservoir and the surrounding area are picturesque. 8 kilometers before you reach Trincomalee you come across the turn off to ‘Kanniya Hot Wells’, just about a kilometer inland from the main road. There are 7 hot springs each with a different temperature. A high wall surrounds this rectangular enclosure, and each spring is enclosed by a dwarf wall to form a well, the waters are said to have therapeutic healing properties which can cure Arthritis and Rheumatism PM – leave on a sight-seeing tour of Trincomalee which includes a visit to Fort Fredrick , built in 1624 the fort remains formidable to this day. Currently used as an army garrison, entrance to the fort is monitored, however you are given the opportunity to either walk or drive into the fort and visit the famous Koneswaram Temple, built atop ‘Swamy Rock’, a rocky promontory cape overlooking Trincomalee. The shrine is believed to have existed at least 2400 years, although a 17th century AD stone inscription at the temple gives it date of birth as circa 1580 BC, Visit the World War 2 cemetery situated on a slope facing the Trincomalee-Nilaweli road, it is on a beautiful site backed by trees and is well maintained. The individual graves are arranged in rows and marked by rectangular headstones with the inscription of the name, national or regimental badge, rank, division and date deceased. Trincomalee/Habarana

Approx. 2.5 hours AM – Breakfast and leave on a leisurely drive to Habarana, check in at the Cinnamon Lodge PM – Refresh and leave on an afternoon safari drive through the Minneriya National Park. 24 species of mammal are to be found in the park, the most important being the elephant of which there are 150-200. Other species present include the sambhur, spotted deer, leopard (rather elusive), sloth bear, toque monkey and purple-faced leaf monkey. Some 160 species of bird have been recorded in the park, including endemics such as the Sri Lanka jungle fowl, hanging parrot, brown-capped babbler, crimson-fronted barbet and black-crested bulbul. Visitors are more likely to see Saurian such as the water monitor and the Sri Lanka swamp crocodile. Day 7

Sigiriya/Polonnaruwa – sightseeing

AM – Breakfast and leave for the Rock fortress of Sigiriya, rising almost 370 metres above sea level with the ruins of a palace dating back to the 5th century AD found on the summit of the rock. The view of the surrounding countryside from the summit of the rock is spectacular PM – Continue on a sightseeing tour of Polonnaruwa and a safari drive through the Minneriya National Park. Polonnaruwa was declared the Capital city in 1070 AD, a city with ruins of Palaces and Buddhist shrines and also some of the best rock art found on the island, the highlight being the gigantic rock sculpture of the Lord Buddha found in the area known as the Gal Vihariya (Stone Temple) which you will visit in addition to the following, The Parakramabahu statue, Quadrangle, Thuparama Image House, Lankathilaka Image House, and the 12th century Lotus Bath Overnight stay at the Cinnamon Lodge – Bed & Breakfast
Day 8

Habarana/Dambulla/Kandy

Driving time - to Kandy without stops– approx. 2.5 hours AM – Breakfast and leave for Kandy en-route visiting the 1st century BC rock cave temple of Dambulla, the most impressive and largest rock cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. During an invasion from South India a Sinhalese king took refuge in these caves and through meditation gained the strength to drive the invaders away, he then declared the caves as a sacred area and built the first cave temple, subsequently the rulers after him added to this and today there are 5 cave temples, a pilgrimage site for Buddhists from around the world. PM – Visit the most sacred Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, also known as the ‘Dalada Maligawa’ a very important Buddhist site that attracts pilgrims from all around the world, thereafter attend a Cultural show in Kandy where you will witness Kandyan Drummers, Dancers & Fire walkers show off their talent Overnight stay at the Mahaweli Reach Hotel – Deluxe room – 2 nights – Bed & Breakfast

Peradeniya Botanical Gardens

AM – Breakfast and leave for Peradeniya, Take a stroll through the Royal Botanical gardens, established in 1843 it has an amazing collection of over 300 varieties of orchids, probably the largest collection in Asia. Day 10

Kandy / Nuwara Eliya – 2 hours

AM – Breakfast & leave on a scenic drive around the Tea covered mountains to Nuwara Eliya, where the British established a hill station and a convalescence center for their military in the 19th century. Known as ‘little England’ to the British. The city has some interesting buildings of mock Tudor and Georgian architecture. Some of the colonial landmarks include, the old post office, the Grand hotel, St Andrews hotel, the racecourse, Lake Gregory and Victoria Park to name a few. Visit a working Tea factory en-route where you will be taken around the factory by a member of the staff who will also explain to you about the Tea manufacturing process. PM – Commence a city tour of Nuwara Eliya and see some of the colonial landmarks, the old post office, the racecourse, Lake Gregory and Victoria Park and many other buildings dating back to the British period Overnight stay at the Grand Hotel in Nuwara Eliya – Deluxe Room – 1 night – Bed & Breakfast
Day 11

Nuwara Eliya/Galle via Ratnapura – Driving time – approx.6 hours

AM – Breakfast and leave on a scenic drive down to Ratnapura, the city of gems and weather permiting visit a gem pit located in a rice paddy and watch the locals as they go through the process of mining. While Ratnapura is famous for its gems it is also known for its rice and fruit cultivations and Tea and Rubber plantations, it is also the gateway to the world heritage site; the Sinharaja forest reserve, the Uda Walawe National Park, and many sites of religious significance, most famous being Adams peak, the sacred mountain; a pilgrimage site for Buddhists, Hindus, Christians and Muslims. Day 12

Sightseeing – Dutch Fortress city
